Supervisory General Engineer
This position is located at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Salem Virginia.
The Supervisory General Engineer has dual role responsibilities and functions as an Engineer and Resident Engineer on delegated construction projects.
- Responsible for engineering analysis, development, design, and preparation of complete plans and specifications for new work and improvement.
- Responsible, and held accountable, for determining the action necessary in the development and completion of design projects, coordination and direction of a project staff that may include architects, engineers, engineering technicians, draftsmen, and clerk/typist and the review of the final contract documents.
- Researched possible sources of energy conservation and incorporates them into the basic deign criteria.
- Directs and monitors performance of multiple A/E firms and/or directs and monitors in-house performance of designs in order to provide complete plans and specifications for projects assigned or deemed critical to the mission of the facility.
- Submits completed design, including drawings, specifications and estimates to the Chief/Assistant Chief of Facility Management Service.
- Coordinate and maintain liaison with organizations having related assignments, other agencies, contractors, utility companies, state and local government authorities, and the general public.
- Performs field surveys and investigations to collect data to determine existing conditions and the extend of construction and repair required to provide services or facilities to meet anticipated needs.
- Prepares cost estimates detailing individual cost of several categories of work involving multiple disciplines.
- Investigates a variety of problems that the construction contractor could experience in construction, such as design errors or omissions, hidden conditions due to excavation of existing utilities or structures and other sources of contract changes.
- Coordinates contract work with using services and associated services.
